we had a really good turnout for Fun A Day Portland! You can kind of get an idea what my exhibit of  “WINDOWPANE” looked like, above.

I just submitted a mockup layout for an upcoming new book I am hoping to publish this year. It will have a selected collection of my poetry/travel journaling/philosophical & somewhat intoxicated (at times) rantings, phrases overheard in passing, dreams, wild tales too true be be believed, and my original artwork and photography. It may also include editorial and literary contributions from a special guest or two.

The book is tenatively titled “WINDOWPANE”. It could have many different meanings, all or none of which might be the actual title of the book. Make of that what you will.

The theme, as it came to me, was birthed standing in an extremely long line between the beginning & end of a TSA security gate at Chicago O’Hare Airport. It has to do with liminal or ecstatic states that we all come across at times during our lifetimes… some of which are hard to capture or explain, but which have the capacity to influence one profoundly.

The work is a follow up to my first solo chapbook, Uncircumcised Rants, and will contain selections from across the past 29 years of my collected journals. (Yes, I have quite a few!) Plus some new pieces, if I feel so inclined.

You can preview WINDOWPANE at the Fun A Day exhibit coming up this Saturday in SE Portland. More information here. You can also visit their main website here.

Primal Death Anxiety

This was the piece I submitted for Launch Pad Gallery’s fall theme show for this year, “Facing Fear.” about 100 artists contributed to this show. You can read about it here.

The elements for this piece (the frame and the mirror) have been hanging around my art studio for some time. I didn’t know how they fit together but I knew some day it would come together.
Then recently, I started reading “Existential Psychotherapy”, by Irvin Yalom. He’s a big name in therapy. He has a quite large chapter related to death anxiety and the way this underlies much of psychopathology. I had, around the same time, experienced a death in my own family. I decided to finish the piece, weaving together symbolism of primal death fears (becoming devoured, injury, the void, etc.) along with the original element that ties it all together: The outline of a skull, backed by a mirror, to be hung level with the viewer’s own face. Imagine this for a second, and leave me a comment about what kind of things YOU would see…?! :)

I have signed up to Launch Pad Gallery’s show, “Facing Fear”. The premiere will be First Friday, Nov. 5th with music, potluck and the usual Launch Pad goodness. Read more about it here.

I will be hosting Art Garage Sale again this weekend at my studio, Aug. 14-15, 10am-5pm each day.

Artists in the sale will include myself (GRIN!), Linda Rand, Lesley Burke, and much more.  Plus we will have a few art supplies to get rid of.

We will also have Tarot readings by Edward Morris during the sale.

Hope you can make it out! Contact me if you have not visited in person before and I will provide the location.

My piece for the Portland Love Show this year generated a request for a custom consignment by an admirer… What I developed was this. It is an exploration into traditional mola art techniques (layering and cutaway/reverse applique’ techniques) in felt. Fun to make!

A closeup of my piece at the Love Show at Olympic Mills Gallery. It included a linkback to a page on this blog, so viewers could see how the piece was constructed.

An awesome voodoo shadowbox-dollhouse by one of the other Loveshow artists.

A friend points out things she admires about my art piece, using her psychic ghost hand…:)

Match, Set, and Love!

I will be leading an art & healing workshop on finding/celebrating your Inner Goddess this Saturday at Pagan Faire. Read more about it here.

This is just an update that the art studio will be closed on First Friday in April for a private event.
Keep an eye out for upcoming announcements about the artist for First Friday in May!

Come down to the Home & Garden show this weekend at the Portland Expo Center to see local artists demonstrate their work:

‘Spring Home & Garden 2010: Visit us in the Art Studio!’.

I will be demonstrating my methods of layering fiber arts, painting and mixed media on canvas on Saturday, 2/27, from 4 to 8pm. I plan to have some small items for sale as well.

Hope to see you there!
