The Art and Craft of S. B. Appel

About the Artist

MeBig500portrait

“Art to me is an expression of the soul. It is a universal communication device by which one can convey all that cannot be put into words or sounds. At the same time, it works as a tool for integrating and transforming personal experience by bringing it into contact with inner Source.

“I was born into a creative family. My father, a student at the Art Institute of Chicago during Leon Golub’s time, was my first teacher; I learned performance and a love of playing or listening to music from my mother.

“Things may have been terribly cultured around my house, but life has not always been the easiest for me. I found that from an early age, I was drawn to creative expression such as drawing, painting, movement or creative ritual/altar building as a way to work through my own thoughts and feelings, communicate with others, and heal the parts of self that hurt. This contemplation & expression continues today, as does my devotion to and enjoyment of helping others learn how creativity can help them too.

“My influences include: Traditional interpretations of Feminism, studies in shamanism, mysticism and the use of symbols and myth, Goddess studies, folk art from many different cultures, Reiki energy healing, Peace Punk and the ‘zine movement, Surrealism, artists of the Abstract Expressionist movement, the decorative arts, Carl Jung, the works of the Existentialists, women of the Beat Generation, rave parties, SF & Bizarro literary genres, and psychic messages from my cat.”
